Start with the right figures
A VAT registration assessment begins with taxable supplies and imports, rather than an unqualified annual sales figure. Zero-rated supplies are taxable supplies; exempt supplies are treated differently. Check the records of the relevant legal person and how connected activities or branches should be considered.
Check both measurement periods
For UAE-resident businesses, compare taxable supplies and imports in the previous 12 months with AED 375,000. Separately, consider the supplies and imports expected in the next 30 days. Exceeding the mandatory threshold in either period may trigger a registration requirement; do not add the two periods together.
Understand voluntary registration
Where mandatory registration does not apply, taxable supplies and imports, or taxable expenses, exceeding AED 187,500 in the relevant period may allow voluntary registration. Assess supplies/imports and expenses separately; adding them together would overstate eligibility.
Prepare before you apply
Organise your trade licence and business details, contact and banking information, ownership documentation and evidence supporting the relevant taxable supplies, imports or expenses. Check the FTA service page for the documents applicable to your entity. The FTA describes a 30-day application deadline after a registration requirement arises; establish your trigger date rather than waiting for year-end.
When to seek a separate review
Non-resident businesses, designated-zone transactions, solely zero-rated supplies, branches and unusual supply arrangements require additional care. The online checker is a starting point and cannot decide every legal or registration question.
